The B.Sc. in Sports and Leisure Management takes a student-centred approach to learning. Students engage with the Sports, Leisure and associated sectors through innovative teaching and actively learning by doing. Real-life problem solving takes place through engagement with community and industry, and collaborative and reflective learning will include using case studies, guest lectures from experts in their field, and site visits to a range of Sports and Leisure facilities.
The course is a mix of business, sports and leisure theory and applied modules providing you when you graduate with a wide range of competencies and attributes that you will find valuable working within the Sports, Leisure and associated sectors. You will study topics such as Communication, Marketing, Intercultural Competence, Leadership in Health Activity and Nutrition, Entrepreneurship, Leisure Law, and Facilities Management. Using options in Years 2 and 3, you can tailor your interests around the themes of community, leisure and wellness, tourism or management. A final-year dissertation will be chosen from themes of Community, Leisure and Well-being, Tourism, and Management.

The BSc in Sports Studies is a 3 year full time level 7 degree course, designed to meet the needs of coaches and sports administrators. The course aims to develop, from evidence-based theory and practice, the students’ ability to coach athletes (individually and in teams), manage sports teams and individual athletes, and manage courses of work for sporting bodies. The course integrates Sport Science, Coaching Science and Sports Administration and Governance. Sports Studies is a relatively new academic discipline in Ireland and brings together the key disciplines which can support employments within the sport and health sector.

Sports Development is the promotion of sports activities within communities and sports organisations. Sports Development Officers typically work with specific sports such as hurling, football, soccer and rugby, or with target populations such as children and younger people, older adults, women, ethnic groups, people with disabilities or people living in socially disadvantaged areas. The role of the Sports Coach is complementary to that of the Sports Development Officer. Their job description is incredibly diverse and may include friend, mentor, instructor, planner, analyst, counsellor, organiser, demonstrator, disciplinarian, physical trainer, psychologist, nutritionist and leader. Successful coaches are innovative, constantly learning and evolving, always challenging themselves and their athletes to improve.

We place a significant emphasis on preparing students to be able to deliver the knowledge through practical coaching sessions. In addition, we aim to prepare students to be industry-ready. Over the four years, students will study the core elements of exercise science, such as components of fitness, the principles of training, sports nutrition, sports psychology, and learn how to analyse biomechanical movements and the science of sport. Students will then specialise in performance technology. Specialist content includes, GPS technology, pre, post, and live sports event analysis, creating an athlete's needs analysis, talent identification, and recruitment. Covering the course content will allow students to take the ITEC gym instruction qualification exam.
